Times Insider explains who we are and what we do, and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together. In September , a living room full of New York writers hatched a scheme. For around a month, they put their lives on hold and devoted their imaginative powers to a secret. Newsstand shoppers were fooled into thinking it was the real thing before looking closely at its title: Not The New York Times. Nor have former New York Times journalists publicly acknowledged their involvement. The following oral history gathers reminiscences from the contributors who are still around 42 years later. These are edited excerpts from a series of interviews. Steve Greene. But what the show does extremely well is take aim at the parts of podcasts around the stories themselves. The thing that truly sets this one apart is the fake ads before during and after most episodes. In true Onion fashion, these riffs start out normal enough. The waning moments of the first episode brings one of the best touches in entire series: a grieving parent is borderline forced into an ad read by Pascall. The series progresses and these joke commercials also venture into other recommended shows in the Onion podcast universe.
His inability to fathom carnival games is the inevitable, logical extreme. The twist in the Episode 4 commercial complete with the deceptively cheery, bounciness of Spotify ad music is even better than the jokey bombshell that comes at the end. TV shows using podcasts as punchlines have taken a similar tack. But is it that much weirder than taking a break to sell yearlong subscriptions to a website-hosting service?

The Daily Manab Zamin reported that Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the Moon, had admitted at a news conference that the historic landing was part of an “elaborate hoax”. Neither they, nor The New Nation, which also ran the story, realised that The Onion, which also prints a parody newspaper, was not a genuine news site. The story, which first ran in the US on Monday, said that Armstrong had been convinced by a conspiracy theorist that the Apollo 11 mission had been orchestrated by the US government.
The satirical article claimed Armstrong said: “It took only a few hastily written paragraphs published by this passionate denier of mankind’s so-called ‘greatest technological achievement’ for me to realise I had been living a lie. Armstrong continued, in the made-up quote, by explaining that, although the journey had felt real, in fact “the entire thing was filmed on a sound stage, most likely in New Mexico”.
