Looking to make a bold statement, the latest offering brings in a new era with a slight name change to eFootball PES and displays a clear commitment towards getting the biggest names involved on the licensing side. Will the other aspects, such as the gameplay and the selection of game modes present, help to provide the ultimate football experience? PES is about build-up play, counter-attacks and generally waiting for an opportunity to present itself. One of the key new features is in regards the dribbling, with the finest of movements being able to be made. It feels damn good, especially in tandem with the already glorious control you have over player movements and body shifting. This is never more apparent than when passing and shooting because rushing either action, particularly whilst off-balance, tussling or facing away from the intended target, will most likely end up going wayward. It also encourages you to utilise the strengths of your players and avoid getting into situations that expose weaknesses. The same physicality awareness is greatly used for incoming aerial balls too. There are a couple of niggling gameplay issues that have caught my eye though, with the weirdest occurrences seeing players failing to lock-on to a loose ball, standing docile as it rolls past. The same problem sometimes arises after a great tackle and rather than retain possession of the ball, they stay still and allow time for the opposition to get up, often leading to them regaining it.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 Review – A Great Game in Need of Fixing
I mean, who has money for two football games each year? The biggest knock against PES for most casual players is that the series has been slowly losing team licenses. Fortunately, Konami has included the ability to create your own badges and kits for your teams that may not be in the game. When you are dealing with hundreds of different players across several leagues, there are bound to be a number of players with dodgy faces that just manage to slip through the cracks.
Bugs & Problems — Poor trophy matchmaking algorithm. Now, there are It’s hard to imagine a GM widow player with 15% accuracy lol. 14 03 – Riot.
Through it all though, the series has managed to gain a strong foothold in at least its core gameplay, something that hardcore fans will claim is the most important factor. PES has developed its own brand of football that diehards swear by, and executed on fleshing it out, while most of its other areas have been left rather stagnant. With the latest iteration, the series has decided to change its name to eFootball PES , but it’s not some revelation or a new direction — just more of the same.
As we’ve been saying over the years, PES solidified itself as the clear competitor to EA Sports FIFA, at least on the pitch, thanks to the realism-focused, tightly controlled and intricately complex simulation of the sport. And yet, rather than grow and advance with each year, there were times when the game had too many issues on the pitch — some things would get better, and yet some aspects would run into new issues. This sadly continues to be the case for PES and its on-field product.
On the positive side, it remains a game that tries to focus on realism and player physicality, instead of being mechanic or animation-based. That means controlling the players, the interaction with the ball, and the flow of the match is very dynamic, and getting a payoff can be truly elating. Hitting the back of the net after putting in some great plays around the midfield is as satisfying as it’s always been.
New this year are some dribbling styles, adjustments to shooting based on the player’s body position and posture, and tweaks to the one-touch systems. These refinements don’t make a world of difference, but rather provide players with additional options and a few new moments on the pitch. When it works, PES still provides some great footballing action, but sadly, as has been the case seemingly almost every year, things often spiral out of control for unknown reasons.
Sure, there are still occasional physics and animation glitches, but these happen in any sports game. More damning are the AI, controls, and referee problems.
Free Euro 2020 DLC out now for PES 2020
A timely overhaul that should take a great game to new heights – though it’s not quite on peak form this year. When I played PES earlier this year , the series’ global product and brand manager Adam Bhatti told me it was the first game of a three-year cycle; a new foundation upon which Konami’s looking to build. For better and worse, it feels like it.
There are marked improvements in some areas, but PES’s overall game has weakened slightly from last year, like a side that’s spent big money recruiting three attacking midfielders during the close season while entirely failing to strengthen their back four.
There are a couple of issues alongside the base level brilliance, however. Crossing is one area in which PES is extremely consistent.

In recent years the “Pro Evolution Soccer” series has delivered arguably the best pure gameplay experience within the sports video game genre. Those who prefer the gameplay of “PES” however may still find it good enough to compensate for the areas in which its lacking. What was already a brilliant playing game on the pitch has been made even better, with improved ability to retain possession and the ability to utilize numerous different body parts to control the ball.
Changes to set pieces have also enhanced the ability to capitalize on corners and free kicks. A slightly slower gameplay speed has also proven beneficial, as it allows for more strategy to be considered and build-ups to materialize organically. While the gameplay is incredibly satisfying and leads to some spectacular moments it still has a few flaws. CPU controlled players have moments where they lack some awareness of where they are on the pitch resulting in some puzzling decisions.
More alarming is the lack of fouls committed by the CPU – something the developers have already stated they’re working on adjusting in a future update to the game. The crowd is also impressive, both visually and in reaction to the events as they take place. In last year’s review I expressed the belief that “PES ” was easily good enough to overcome licensing shortcomings , but if it proved unable to do so then “no sports video game can. A number of prominent leagues and teams are left without their authentic licensing in “PES ” and while they can be replaced with created representations by applying an option file on PlayStation 4 and PC it’s a process that many may be unfamiliar with, and those on Xbox One don’t even have the option to do.
On the flip side the 15 clubs with “PES” exclusive marketing partnerships are represented incredibly well. Online play is one area that has lagged significantly behind the competition and despite a big new feature this year it remains a weakness of the series. Online co-op is the big addition, providing the ability to play with three users connected together on a team against another team with three users.
PES 2018 review
Even after a facelift, the menus are pretty bad; a forlorn love letter to an era of awful PS2 menu music and cluttered formation screens. For some reason, every time you try and sign a player through an agent menu in MyClub mode, it forces you to look at the potential transfers you could sign before bumping you back a screen, whereby you have to push the deal through again.
Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. The thing is, skipping through ugly formation screens is an easy-to-forgive, fleeting annoyance when you finally get a ball at your feet and see what a mostly brilliant performer PES is on the pitch.
Keepers have been a historical problem for PES, particularly for those who and it’s probably the best 15 seconds of gaming I’ve had all year. Stuttering is a common problem, even if you’ve set your matchmaking search to.
Please refresh the page and retry. T he annual football game clash has been fired up again in recent years, with Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer’s huge improvement on the pitch finally giving FIFA a sturdy challenge. While FIFA is unlikely to be overhauled in the sales stakes, PES reclaimed its place as the critical darling last year with many proclaiming it to be the best football game ever made. Konami are looking to keep that momentum going with PES It is all a bit heavier and measured, in a good way, with more considered build-up and physical play.
But it retains the whip-quick arcade feel that gives the game such pep. The deliberately dropped frame of a turning animation here, the exaggerated fizz and curl of certain shots there.
